Big Data: Privacy Reflection

Just like the last unit, there were many things that I didn’t know about where our data goes, who has our data, and what is done with that data. I would have expected social media sites, but even sex toys were getting information about you (Hill, Mattu)? Even just getting our information and selling them off to advertising companies is just as wrong in itself. But that is a huge invasion of privacy. Those companies know better than to steal their private info; especially a sex toy company. Why do companies who we entrusted with our private data break that trust and sell it off to dozens of other companies? Just for quick money? It somewhat bothers me how this is how advertising has become.

What I took away from this was that I shouldn’t be sharing too much information on the internet and be wary of the websites that I sign up for. Even a simple email should be extra encrypted for privacy’s sake. With the way I am seeing it, Privacy has become somewhat of a luxury. Available to those who understand what is done with their information. The tech-savvy people, companies who created the terms and conditions, etc. I definitely won’t be signing up for more social media sites or shopping site than I already have now with what I learned here.
